Does tree removal include stump removal?
Tree removal and stump grinding aren't always one job. Learn what to confirm about stump height, grinding, cleanup and access.
The short answer
Not necessarily. A quote to remove a standing tree may finish with a stump left at an agreed height. Grinding or removing that stump is a different outcome and should be clearly included or excluded in writing.
If you want the space ready for lawn, planting, paving or another project, describe the intended result before accepting the quote.
What does tree removal cover?
The quote should identify the tree, the work involved, access arrangements, how branches and timber will be handled and what remains at ground level. Terms such as “tree removed” or “site cleared” can mean different things unless the finished condition is specified.
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding reduces the remaining stump using specialist equipment. The appropriate depth and finish depend on the site and what happens next. Grinding does not necessarily remove every root, and it should not be assumed to prepare a site for foundations or other construction.
A stump near fencing, paving, irrigation, retaining walls or underground services may require extra planning.
Five questions to ask
1. Will a stump remain, and at what height?
2. Is grinding included or quoted separately?
3. Are any surface roots part of the work?
4. What happens to branches, logs, mulch and grindings?
5. What will the agreed finished area look like?
Two quotes are only comparable if they cover the same result.
What should you send GDE?
Provide the suburb, safe photographs showing the tree or stump and its surroundings, the usual access route and a short explanation of the intended use of the area. Mention gates, steps, slopes and any known underground services.
If the tree is still standing, ask about tree removal and stump work together. If the tree was removed earlier, explain that the enquiry concerns the remaining stump.

See tree removal for standing-tree work and stump removal for stump services. Send your details through contact us and ask for both components to be included or separated clearly in the written quote.
